Description

Prepare for the climbing adventure of a lifetime with Golden Mountain Guides’ four day Matterhorn Prep Course. This mountaineering training course is specifically designed to help climbers develop the essential skills, climbing movement, technical know-how, and confidence needed to summit one of the world’s most iconic peaks. Held in the Front Range of Colorado, this comprehensive course is perfect for those aiming to tackle the Matterhorn or other high-alpine climbs around the world.

Throughout four days of climbing and training, you’ll gain mountaineering skills specific to the unique challenges you’ll face on the Matterhorn’s Hornli Ridge. Learn to navigate fixed lines while ascending and descending, practice climbing rock with gloves and crampons on, refine technical skills such as lowering, and so much more. Colorado offers the perfect training ground to prepare you for the Matterhorn with amazing terrain in Eldorado Canyon, the Boulder Flatirons, and many of the surrounding mountain ranges which offer terrain remarkably similar to the Hornli Ridge. Whether you’re a seasoned climber looking to improve, or a dedicated novice just entering the exciting world of mountaineering, this course will prepare you physically and mentally for the challenges of the Matterhorn.

To be successful, you’ll need exceptional fitness, stamina, and proficiency in scrambling and climbing technical terrain up to 5.7, all while wearing mountain boots, crampons, and a backpack. Our goal is to help you build these skills and physical conditioning necessary for the demands of the Matterhorn’s summit day. Join us this summer for an unforgettable adventure and elevate your mountaineering skillset – your path to the Matterhorn begins here!

Sample Itinerary

Day 1: Morning gear preparations and review of equipment specifics, fundamental climbing knowledge, and climbing movement. The afternoon is typically spent moving over 3rd and 4th class terrain in mountaineering boots to get familiar with movement techniques, rope systems, descending techniques, and Matterhorn pacing.

Day 2: Multi-pitch rock climbing route up to 5.7 in Eldorado Canyon to work on movement skills in mountaineering boots. An emphasis is placed on specific Matterhorn techniques including using fixed boat ropes with gloves and crampons on, efficient movement through mixed moderate mountaineering terrain, and how to utilize fixed equipment commonly found on the Hornli Ridge.

Day 3: Ascent of one or two different Flatirons above Boulder. Low level 5th class climbing coupled with lots of vertical mileage to practice movement, rope-work, fitness, and endurance.

Day 4: Mixed climbing alpine objective with terrain similar to what you’ll find on the Matterhorn; requiring fast and efficient mountain travel and climbing in boots over mixed 5th class terrain at altitude.

*Please note that the sample itinerary above may change at the guides discretion to better meet your learning outcomes, or to adjust for the ever changing nature of mountain conditions.
