In 2023, Guide Joe Thompson was leading a ice climbing trip in Lincoln Falls when he stumbled upon an avalanche path that took out most of the approach trail to the falls. Founder of climb avy aware, Dara Miles lost her climber partner to an avalanche in British Columbia in 2019 while ice climbing. According to the CAIC, there have been 20 climbing fatalities due to avalanches since 2013.
