Description

 

Ouray, Colorado is arguably one of the most famous ice climbing destinations in the world. Hundreds of different ice routes and small town hospitality make this an excellent way to spend a weekend.

This introductory ice climbing course is a perfect way to become acquainted with the gear, movement, and technical skills needed to start climbing ice.  This two day course helps climbers feel comfortable swinging tools and will leave you yearning for more!  This course meets at Peak Mountain Guides office at 311 Main Street in Ouray at 7:30am.

Price Includes

 

  • A professionally trained and/or certified AMGA guide

  • All necessary ice climbing equipment including harnesses, helmets, belay devices, crampons, ice tools, and mountaineering boots

  • Professional guiding and instruction throughout the entire course

Price Excludes

 

  • Transportation. You will be responsible for your own transportation to and from a designated meeting area

  • Gratuity

  • Personal items such as food, clothing, backpack, etc.

Itinerary

 

​Day 1:

After brief introductions, your guide will fit you with a harness, helmet, boots, and crampons.  The group will then travel two minutes to a nearby climb where your guide will set up a toprope and explain the theory behind anchor construction.  If applicable, the group will rappel into the gorge and start belaying and movement lessons for the day.

Day 2:

The day begins with participants becoming involved in setting up the first anchor of the day.  Day 2 is all about practice and refinement of the previous day's lessons.  Those ready for steeper terrain will be shown techniques to progress.  Your guide will also introduce you to ice screws, how they are placed, and how they are used to construct an anchor.
